A leaking oil hose can drain your Avalon’s engine and wipe out the bargain price. Toyota’s Limited Service Campaign 90K covered certain 2005–2009 gasoline Avalons with the 3.5-liter V6. The rubber hose could degrade and leak. Toyota listed engine noise and an oil-pressure warning among the possible signs.
The year groups below flag inspection needs, not proven differences in failure rates. Recall records identify specific defects and affected VINs. They don’t predict how long an individual engine, transmission, or battery will last.
1. Start with the VIN, then inspect the fault
Early V6 cars need oil-hose records
Check the oil-hose repair history on any 2005–2009 Avalon you inspect. Only certain VINs qualified for 90K. A missing repair record leaves the hose’s age and replacement status unresolved.

A recall and an expired program carry different terms
An open safety recall means the VIN still needs the specified remedy. Have Toyota confirm its status. Limited service campaigns can expire; The later 90K extension ended on December 31, 2021. Its old notice won’t establish who pays today.
ZKK was a customer-support program for certain 2013–2015 Avalon Hybrids. It required a confirmed brake-booster fault and had separate time and mileage limits. Toyota’s records must establish the VIN’s eligibility before coverage can be claimed.
Complaint counts can point toward faults worth checking. They don’t show what share of all cars failed. Vehicle age, sales volume, engine type, and fitted equipment can skew comparisons between years.
A completed hose repair leaves another question if the engine previously lost oil pressure. Bearings can retain damage after the leak stops. A full dipstick and a dry engine bay cannot rule out that wear.
2. Oil leaks can turn a 2005–2009 Avalon into an expensive buy
A small hose carries pressurized engine oil
The 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6 uses an oil line to feed its variable valve-timing hardware. On affected cars, that line includes a rubber hose section. Toyota found that the rubber could degrade and leak. Campaign 90K applied to certain gasoline Avalons; it was a limited service campaign, not a safety recall.
This line carries oil under pressure while the engine runs. A failed hose can let the pump push oil out of the engine. If the oil-pressure light comes on, pull over safely and shut the engine off. Running with too little oil pressure can damage bearings and camshaft journals.
A completed campaign doesn’t prove an all-metal pipe
Toyota’s 90K repair procedure replaced the flexible hose and two clamps. It didn’t require every repaired Avalon to receive an all-metal pipe. A rubber section can remain after a proper repair. Check the invoice and fitted part before judging whether the original hose remains.
Have the inspecting shop match the invoice to the part on the engine. Missing records may require further checks and a repair quote. The original 90K offer ended March 31, 2013. Toyota’s later extension ended December 31, 2021.
Timing-cover leaks carry a separate labor bill
Toyota bulletin EG019-07 addressed possible oil seepage on some 2005–2006 Avalons with the 2GR-FE V6. The leak formed where the Bank 1 cylinder head, block, and timing cover meet. Technicians had to confirm that source before resealing. A technical service bulletin alone doesn’t authorize a free repair.
This V6 uses a timing chain, so don’t confuse a cover reseal with timing-belt service. The quote needs to cover access, cover removal, surface preparation, and resealing. Fresh sealant needs clean mating surfaces to bond, or the joint can leak again.
3. Older Avalons need more than a clean service book
Fresh oil can hide old sludge
The 1995–2004 Avalon uses Toyota’s 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6. Toyota’s historical oil-gelling policy included certain 1997–2002 Avalons, subject to its production limits and terms. Check oil-change records for gaps and verify the engine’s current condition.
Sludge can restrict oil flow through the engine. Fresh oil on the dipstick won’t show whether deposits remain under the valve covers. Gaps in service records give the inspecting shop reason to look deeper for sludge and wear.
Timing-belt service adds a separate expense on these older V6 cars. Ask for an invoice showing the replacement date and mileage. A low odometer reading cannot tell you how long that belt has been fitted.
A broken lock bar can stop the steering wheel
Recall 10V345000 covered certain 2000–2004 Avalons. A casting flaw could let cracks form in the steering-lock bar. Repeated locking and unlocking could spread those cracks until the bar broke.
A loose piece could move toward the steering shaft during a right turn. Alignment with the shaft’s locking hole could lock the wheel while the car moved. Toyota’s remedy replaced the steering-column upper bracket with a newly designed one.
Affected VINs span all five model years, from 2000 through 2004. Have Toyota confirm the completed repair for the individual car. Smooth steering on a test drive cannot rule out a cracked lock bar.
An earlier airbag repair may leave another recall open
Certain 2003–2004 gasoline Avalons fall under airbag recall 15V043000. Electrical noise could damage a part inside the airbag control module. That fault could trigger airbags or seat-belt pretensioners without a crash.
Toyota required replacement of the airbag control module. Cars that received a noise filter under earlier campaigns still needed this later repair. An invoice for filter installation alone does not establish completion of 15V043000.
Ask Toyota for the car’s historical campaign records, including completion dates. NHTSA’s VIN search can omit recalls more than 15 years old. It also excludes completed recalls and manufacturer service campaigns, so it cannot serve as a full repair history.
4. Dashboard, headlight, and pedal faults on 2005–2012 cars
Heat-damaged dashboards can turn sticky
Toyota addressed cracked, sticky, or melting dashboards through Warranty Enhancement Program ZE6. It applied to certain 2005–2010 Avalon VINs with heat- or humidity-related damage. During inspection, check the surface texture and look for glare from the driver’s seat. Glare can vary with surface condition, sunlight, and viewing angle.
A replacement invoice can establish whether Toyota already changed the dashboard. ZE6’s primary coverage ended May 31, 2017, regardless of mileage. Secondary coverage lasted 10 years from first use, regardless of mileage, under the program’s terms.
Headlights that return can still fail again
Some 2008 Avalon owners report headlights going out while driving. Switching the lights off and back on restored them for a time. Several reports describe the fault returning during the same trip. These accounts document a symptom, but they don’t prove one cause across all affected cars.
Have the shop identify the fitted headlight type before quoting parts. The diagnosis needs to establish which bulb, power supply, or connection has failed. A brief demonstration with both lights working cannot rule out an intermittent fault.
Two pedal recalls need separate repair records
Certain 2005–2010 Avalons faced two distinct accelerator-pedal faults. Recall 09V388000 addressed an unsecured or unsuitable floor mat trapping the pedal. The mat could hold the accelerator down after the driver lifted their foot.
Recall 10V017000 addressed friction inside the pedal mechanism itself. Increased friction could slow the pedal’s return or leave it stuck partly down. Removing the floor mat would leave that internal fault untouched.
Toyota’s records should show completion of each campaign that applies to the VIN. A receipt for floor-mat work alone cannot establish that the pedal mechanism received its repair. Even with clear space around it, a binding pedal may fail to return fully.
Later cars bring separate audio and airbag recalls
The 2011–2012 Avalon falls outside the model years listed in 90K and ZE6. Those exclusions don’t establish a lower overall failure rate. Oil leaks, worn parts, and missed service still affect the repair bill.
Certain 2011–2012 Avalons fall under subwoofer recall 15V047000. A short in the subwoofer wiring could cause overheating and a fire. Toyota’s remedy included replacing the audio amplifier and fitting a protective cover around the subwoofer.
Certain 2012 gasoline Avalons also fall under airbag-control recall 20V024000. Confirm that repair separately from the audio work. Electrical interference could prevent airbags or seat-belt pretensioners from working as intended during a crash.
5. 2013–2018 Avalons need a ride test and recall checks
Test the ride on the roads you use
Ride feel is a buying preference, not a measure of failure risk. Test a 2013–2015 Avalon over patched streets and road joints you know well. Tire condition, pressure, and worn suspension parts can change how bumps reach the seat.
Toyota introduced two suspension settings for 2016. Gasoline Touring models received more responsive tuning. XLE through Limited grades used the comfort-focused setup. Compare the actual trim and condition before paying more for a later car.
Steel road joints could trigger the brakes
Recall 15V728000 covered certain 2013–2015 gasoline and hybrid Avalons with the optional pre-collision system. Its radar could mistake a steel road joint or plate for an obstacle. The car could then apply its brakes without the driver pressing the pedal. Toyota also described a warning buzzer, the PCS indicator lamp and a message on the multi-information display, and possible tightening of the front seat belts.
Toyota’s final repair replaced the radar sensor and driving-support computer, added an Engine Room Wire #5 jumper harness (adapter), and required radar calibration. Have Toyota confirm completion for the VIN. An early record showing that PCS was disabled does not prove the final repair was completed.
On a hybrid, a brake-booster repair addresses different hardware. That work cannot correct radar readings or replace the PCS computer. The two faults require separate diagnoses and repair records.
Comfort tuning doesn’t settle the airbag record
A comfort-tuned 2016–2018 Avalon may suit buyers who dislike a firmer ride. That’s a reason to test-drive it, not proof of better reliability. Worn shocks, damaged tires, and overdue service can still add costs.
Recall 20V024000 covered certain 2012–2018 gasoline Avalons and 2013–2018 hybrids. Electrical interference during certain crashes could damage a circuit inside the airbag control module. Airbags or seat-belt pretensioners could then fail to deploy fully, or at all.
Toyota’s remedy generally added a noise filter between that module and its wiring harness. Some cars required an inspection to determine whether the filter was needed. Confirm the recorded outcome, since a normal test drive cannot reproduce the crash conditions behind this fault.
Certain 2018 gasoline Avalons also fall under fuel-pump safety recall 20V012000. Verify the applicable VIN’s pump-replacement record separately. A failed pump can cut fuel delivery and stall the engine.
6. Avalon Hybrids need separate brake and battery checks
Brake warning lights need a code scan
Toyota’s Customer Support Program ZKK addressed internal brake-booster faults on certain 2013–2015 Avalon Hybrids. It was separate from safety recalls. Drivers could see brake, ABS, or slip warning lights. Those lights have other causes and don’t establish coverage by themselves.
Toyota used codes C1391, C1252, C1256, and C1253 to help confirm the covered fault. For a qualifying failure, the repair replaced both the brake booster and booster pump. The invoice should name both assemblies.
Expired coverage can put both assemblies on your bill
ZKK’s primary coverage ended March 31, 2021, regardless of mileage. Secondary coverage lasted 10 years or 150,000 miles from first use, whichever came first. Low mileage cannot keep coverage active past the time limit.
Have Toyota check the VIN, fault codes, first-use date, mileage, and repair history for eligibility. If coverage has expired, get an installed quote for the confirmed fault. Both assemblies require parts and labor when the specified repair applies.
A healthy charge gauge doesn’t prove a healthy battery
Have a qualified hybrid technician assess the high-voltage battery before purchase. The check should include stored faults and battery performance under load. Dashboard charge bars show the current charge level. They cannot tell you how much useful life remains in the pack.
Starting with model year 2020, Toyota’s hybrid-battery warranty increased to 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. The clock starts at first use. This change didn’t extend the battery warranty on 2013–2015 Avalon Hybrids.
A used purchase doesn’t restart the warranty clock. Verify the first-use date, current mileage, and applicable terms. Brake-booster, inverter, and other repairs have their own coverage limits.
7. Newer Avalons still need precise recall checks
Fuel-pump failures cross the 2019 redesign
Safety recall 20V012000, Toyota code 20TA02, included certain 2018–2019 gasoline Avalons. The later 20V682000 recall included certain 2019–2020 gasoline Avalons. A failed low-pressure pump could cause rough running, a stall, or a no-start. Toyota’s remedy replaced it with an improved pump.
Certain 2019 Avalon Hybrids had a separate fuel-pump program: Special Service Campaign 21TC03. Its remedy also replaced the low-pressure pump. Have Toyota check the VIN and repair record against the applicable campaign. A “fuel system checked” entry doesn’t establish pump replacement.
The block’s serial number decides the engine repair
Recall 20V064000 included certain 2020 Avalon Hybrids with faulty engine-block castings. Pores in the casting could allow cracks and coolant leaks. Coolant could escape outside the engine or leak internally, leading to overheating and engine damage.
Toyota directed dealers to check the engine block’s casting serial number. If the block was involved, dealers had to replace the engine, including the engine block. The repair record must show the inspection result and any replacement. An unaffected casting required no engine replacement under this recall.
Two airbag faults need different fixes
Certain 2019 gasoline and hybrid Avalons fall under recall 18V685000. Faulty software could falsely detect a fault during startup and disable affected SRS satellite sensors. That could prevent affected airbags from deploying as designed. Toyota’s remedy updated the airbag-control software.
Recall 23V865000 affects certain 2020–2021 gasoline and hybrid Avalons. Sensors that help classify the front passenger could short internally. The fault could prevent the front passenger airbag from deploying. The remedy calls for sensor inspection and replacement where needed.
Recall 23V865000’s Avalon scope stops at model year 2021; it doesn’t include 2022 cars. Match the VIN’s recorded outcome to the required remedy. An airbag software update doesn’t establish that recalled passenger-seat sensors were inspected or replaced.
Price the condition and warranty on 2021–2022 cars
Compare a 2021–2022 Avalon with older cars using service records and a pre-purchase inspection. Fewer years of exposure to heat and corrosion can support a higher asking price. Mileage, storage, and use still shape the actual wear. Verify each VIN’s recall status before pricing the work due.
For hybrids, confirm any remaining battery warranty before assigning it value. Have Toyota check the original first-use date, odometer reading, and warranty terms.
A 2022 hybrid at 145,000 miles has at most 5,000 miles left before the battery warranty’s mileage cutoff. Any remaining coverage also depends on its first-use date and warranty terms. Hybrid-battery coverage ends at 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.
